Introduction

We will be able to configure a publisher’s Placement ID (provided by us) to certain creative types (1) Image Only; (2) Text Only; (3) Combo Ads (Picture and Text); or (4) Rich Media. Each of these is described in further detail below.

Image Only

When we configure a publisher’s Placement ID to image only, it means that our ad serving technology will only serve images to that ID. Millennial Media follows the Mobile Marketing Association (“MMA”) standards for mobile images. As such, their guidelines specify 6:1 aspect ratios. The specific image sizes supported by the MMA are as follows:

  • X-Large: 300x50 pixels
  • Large: 216x36
  • Medium: 168x28
  • Small: 120x20

In addition to the standard MMA sizes, Millennial Media supports a 6:1 aspect ratio for iPhone-specific images at 320x53.

For us to properly provide the correct image size, the publisher MUST pass in the valid UA string for the browser on that device in order to provide us the specifications of the device and what it can support. This is a key component to the ad serving process and allows us to serve the publisher a much more device-specific ad unit.

In some instances we support a 4:1 aspect ratio as well, as this size is support by the MMA.

Text Only

When Millennial Media configures a publisher’s Placement ID to image only, it means that our ad serving technology will only serve text links to that ID. As a result, this ad will come to the specified PID with a text-only link.

Combo Ads

Combo ads are those ads that have a combination, or “combo” of images and text. When Millennial Media configures a publisher’s Placement ID to image only, it means that our ad serving technology will only serve combo ads to that ID.

Please note the image sizes referenced above that Millennial Media supports and serves to the publisher. In order for Millennial Media to properly provide the correct image size, the publisher MUST pass in the valid UA string for the browser on that device in order to provide us the specifications of the device and what it can support. This is a key component to the ad serving process and allows us to serve the publisher a much more device-specific ad unit.

Rich Media

In addition to image and text creatives, we will also be providing Rich Media creative banners in the form of JavaScript and XHTML. As a result, you should not parse the Millennial Media response for an image or text banner, as there will be Rich Media creatives returned to your site. By parsing the Millennial Medial response, there is a much greater chance that the creative will be broken when delivered to the handset.

Additional examples of Rich Media creatives can be viewed at our demo site. If you view the source of these creatives, you will see an example of the response back to your sites.
